We will tour Santa Fe Trail sites in the Ford County area. We will eat a "Dutch Treat" lunch in Dodge City around noon. Walking will be limited, but be sure to dress for the occasion, most of these sites are in the county, and the temperatures could be hot.
Santa Fe Trail Reasearch Site web master, Larry Mix will be our tour guide for the day. So for those of you that have not seen some of these sites, you won't want to miss this tour, it will be very interesting.
The tour will start at the "Howell Ruts" at 10:00 a.m. This location is west of Howell, Kansas approximately 1.5 miles on Highway 50. The National Park Service has a nice interpretive signage and walkway at this site area.
Sites that we will visit before lunch will be Howell Rut's, Point of Rocks, the "Caches", sites of Fort Mann, Fort Atkinson, Fort Dodge, Fort Dodge Museum, Black Pool, and the Warner Ranch and many Santa Fe Trail Sites and Ruts along this part of the Trail.
After lunch we will visit Fort Dodge, the Wet/Dry Route Junction, and then head North on the Fort Dodge/Fort Hays Military Road to view a few trail rut sites.
The tour should be over by 4:00 p.m. I hope to see you in a rut.
