Location: The Trailhead marker is located at the south end of the Fort Hays Visitors Center parking lot, Frontier Historical Park, commonly called Old Fort Hays, Hays, Kansas. This is the third location for Fort Hays. The first fort was called Fort Fletcher and was about 15 miles to the east. The second one was just a short distance from the first location and was called Fort Hays. After a flood wiped out this second Fort Hays is was moved to its present locaion.

Physical Evidence: Faint evidence of ruts is found east of the Visitors Center where the wagons left the warehouse to circle north of the parade grounds before turning southwest.

Location: From Site I-3 Marker, Continue west .4 mile and left .6 mile to the marker on the right.
At this location on the east side of the road and about 25 yards to the north on the Junction Point Marker is a Butterfield Overland Despatch marker, don't miss it.

Physical Evidence: Immediately southwest of the marker, a cutdown approaches the creek. Other cutdowns are located at two separate points of the creek as it curves 100 yards northeast of the marker.

Location: From the Site I-12 Marker, return to the road, continue south 2.5 miles, right 1.2 miles, left 1 mile, and right 1 mile to the marker at the southeast corner of the intersection next to the marker commemorating Duncan's Crossing, the designation of the crossing in the early settlement days of the county.
