Fowler Ruts The Wet Route of the Santa Fe Trail

The Black Pool and Fowler Ruts on the Wet Route of the Santa Fe Trail northeast of Ford, Kansas. The dark line in the lower center of the picture is water coming from the Black Pool on the north, this water runs into the Arkansas River south of this location. Trail ruts can be seen running at an angle from just north of the pool in the lower half of the photo to the east and west across this virgin pasture land. At this point the Santa Fe Trail comes out of the flat river bottom land where it has been sence the Big Bend of the Arkansas near present day Ellinwood, Kansas and makes a swing to the north to miss some deep ravines just to the west of the Black Pool area. The marker is located on the west end of these ruts in the fence line.
