Friday 9th September.
The morning cool and pleasant. Raised our camp & started onward at 10 o'Clk. Proceeded up the river 12 Miles and 33 Chains, and halted on the bank at a point where the Hills close in upon the River, just at the mouth of a Ravine or small drain. The River is wider here than just below, & has many small Islands. The Prairie opposite & for several miles below is low and flat. We were obliged to leave one of the Horses this Morning, Lame, tired, poor and Sick.
Gregg, 77.COMMENTS: The campsite would have been south of the marker closer to the Arkansas River.
