HISTORIC DESCRIPTION: The Fort Hays/Fort Dodge Road ran immediately to the west of the marker intercepting the Smoky Hill Trail which ran on an east-west course to nearby Lookout Station, a stop on the Butterfield Overland Despatch.

COMMENTS: Smoky Hill Trail is the author's accommodation of modern parlance. During the historic period, the Smoky Hill Trail was known as the Road to Denver or the Smoky Hill Road. The original township survey map labeled it the Denver Express Road.
