Come out to Fort Larned National Historic Site July 4th weekend to transport yourself back to what life was like in the 1860's through the living history interpretive program. Whether your interests take you to the Post Blacksmith to see him make things out of iron, or visit with the soldiers in the barracks about life in the 1860's army, view the post prison; visit with the post medial staff about hospital care at Fort Larned or the ladies about their life at the Fort.Additional daily programs will be offered:

Established as Camp on Pawnee Fork in October of 1859 and later named Camp Alert and then Fort Larned, this military post helped protect the Santa Fe Trail and the railroad that replaced it, was an important post throughout the Civil War, and was actively involved in the Indian Wars during and after the Civil War. The post was abandoned in 1878. As you enter Fort Larned National Historic Site today, keep in mind that you are stepping back into the late 1860s. Imagine what life was like here during those years.
