Fowler Ruts on The Wet Route of the Santa Fe Trail

The Black Pool on the Wet Route of the Santa Fe Trail northeast of Ford, Kansas. The dark line in the lower center of the picture is water coming from the Black Pool to the north. This water runs into the Arkansas River south of this location. A little over a half mile of Santa Fe Trail ruts can be seen running at an angle from lower right corner of the photo to the west side of the photo across this pasture land. At this point the Santa Fe Trail comes out of the flat river bottom land where it has been since the Big Bend of the Arkansas near present day Ellinwood, Kansas. It makes a swing to the north to miss some deep ravines just to the west of the Black Pool area. There is a marker located on the west end of these ruts in the fence line.
