On the east edge of Burlingame US 56 crosses Switzler Creek, this was a major traill crossing. First called Bridge Creek, the creek was later named after John Switzler who had a toll bridge near this location. The Main Street running through Burlingame is the Santa Fe Trail. On this street there are several businesses named after this famous highway across Kansas.
