To get to this set of ruts go west on US 56 from Hugoton, Kansas 11.7 miles to the Stevens/Morton County line. Go north about 11.3 miles and turn east 2 miles at this location the Schmidt ruts are on the south side of the road. From this location go north 2 miles and east 2 miles. These exceptional ruts are to the south of the road at this location. The ruts run for about 1.4 miles to a reliable water source along the Santa Fe Trail after leaving Lower Springs according to some of the old trail journal notes.
