South of Springer, New Mexico there is a Santa Fe Trail landmark know as Wagon Mound. In trail days someone decided the profile of the hill resembled a covered wagon pulled by teams of oxen, so the feature became known as the Wagon Mound. It was the last great landmark on the westward journey across the plains. This landmark ranks right up there with the Kansas landmark of Pawnee Rock.
