"Bear Creek Pass Ruts"
on the
Cimarron Cutoff

These ruts are about 13.9 miles north of Ulysses, Kansas on the west side of KS 25 Highway in Kearny County. These ruts are coming from the Upper Crossing of the Arkansas River through Bear Creek Pass, heading for Lower Springs. They are located at the south edge of the sand hills in Kearny County, Kansas. This area is close proximity of the Charles Bent caravan attack by Indians, and Major Bennet Riley came to aide the Caravan.

There is an account of this attack in Leo Oliva's book on our site "Soldiers on the Santa Fe Trail" pg 29 - 31
