Spring Meeting
The Chapter's Spring Meeting will be conducted April 7, 2002 at the First Christian Church in Pawnee Rock, Kansas. Members and guests are asked to convene at 12:30 p.m. for a covered dish dinner. The chapter will be responsible for the main course, drinks and table service. Please make plans to attend as this will be our last meeting before the May 4th seminar. Plans for the seminar will be finalized.

The Santa Fe Trail Rendezvous
Santa Fe Trail Rendezvous, September 19-20, 2002 will focus on The Legend & Lore of the Santa Fe Trail. Included will be presentations related to well known stories of the Santa Fe Trail which occurred in a section of the trail from the site of the Chavez murder near present Lyons, Kansas to the location of the Cimarron Crossing near present Cimarron, Kansas. In connection with the presentation, there will be field trips covering the same area.

Details about the rendezvous along with registration information will be in "Traces"

Chapter's 2002 Officers
Election of officers was held at the January 20th chapter meeting.
Elected were:

President Rusti Gardner
Vice-President Barbara German
Secretary/Treasurer Anita Thomas
Program Director David Clapsaddle
Board Advisor Lon Palmer
At the same time Lon Palmer, the 2001 President, was presented a plaque in recognition of service to the chapter.

Sixth Annual Seminar Plans are in the Works
As the chapter makes plans for the annual seminar scheduled for May 4th, attention has centered on preparation for the meal to be prepared for the event. To assist in the preparation, the chapter voted at the January meeting to purchase four roaster ovens and a 100 cup coffee maker. Rusti Gardner, long time Chuck Wagon chairperson, will soon be in contact with chapter members requesting help in the preparation and serving of the meal.

Computer Addition
Thanks to the generosity of Fort Larned National Historic Site, the chapter is the proud owners of a New (old) computer donated as a result of the fort updating its systems.

Our new (old) computer will be put to good use especially with regard to the production of the chapter newsletter and other chapter business.

We have established a Wet/Dry Routes Chapter e-mail address. If you have any ideas or information for the newsletter, please contact us. All help will be appreciated.

Faye Anderson Award
Presented to Cecil Johnson of Larned, Kansas at the January 20th meeting of the Wet/Dry Routes Chapter was the Faye Anderson Award. A well qualified recipient, Cecil among other things, is largely responsible for the construction of the cedar frames for the ten interpretive markers placed in recent years by the chapter.

Interestingly, one of those markers is situated on Johnson's property, three miles southwest of Larned on U.S. 56 highway. This is the site of Forks in Santa Fe road where the Dry Route originally forked from the Wet Route.

This acreage is part of the homestead filed by Cecil's grandfather William Johnson, in 1873.

Kansas History Day
As usual, the chapter will offer an award of $200.00 for any contestant who is a state winner in the Annual Kansas History Day scheduled for May 4, 2002 at Eisenhower Museum in Abilene, Kansas. This award is limited to entries related to the Santa Fe Trail which shows merit.

Because the Kansas History Day this year falls on the same day of our Seminar and no one from the chapter will be available to judge the entries, Ron Parks, Director of the Kaw Museum at Council Grove, has graciously volunteered to represent the chapter in this regard.
