Bent's Old Fort 2016 Calendar of Events

March 19, 2016 ~*~ Frontier Skills Day
     Adults are invited to take on various roles at the fort for a day. Be a hunter, blacksmith, trader,, carpenter, laborer, or domestic. Space is limited; pre-registration required. Call (719) 383-5026 for information and application. Registration opens on January 2, 2016.

May 8-September 5, 2016 ~*~ Trails and Rails Trips
     Volunteers narrate excursions aboard Amtrak's Southwest Chief departing La Junta, CO on Mondays and Fridays for overnight trips to Albuquerque, NM. For more information, call (719) 383-5024.

June 4-5, 2016 ~*~ Santa Fe Trail Encampment
     The park's main living history event for the year will feature historic interpretations of Santa Fe Trail traders, U. S. Army soldiers and Plains Indians. Experience the hey-day of the trail through ongoing demonstrations. Camps, set up near the fort, will be open for touring. Sunday, June 5 will feature a 3-mile excursion on the Santa Fe Trail. July 4, 2016 ~*~ Old-Fashioned 4th
     Enjoy an afternoon of patriotic festivities including cannon firings, orations,games, and refreshments as the post celebrates Independence Day in 1840s-style.

July 9, 2016 ~*~ Kiss' Quarters
     Children, ages 7 to 11, get to "step back in time" and experience the life of a fort employee, customer, or visitor. Pre-registration is required. Call (719) 383-5026 for an application or print one off from the park website starting May 1, 2016.

August 25, 2016 ~*~ Grand Opening of Immersive Fort
     As the National Park Service celebrates its 100th birthday, and 40 years after the opening of the reconstructed Bent's Old Fort, the park will unveil an on-line immersive replica of the fort allowing students around the world to make virtual visits.

September 17, 2016 ~*~ Hispanic Heritage Day
     One 19th-century visitor remarked that, "Spanish is the prevailing language spoken at the fort. . ." Come visit as the rich and colorful history of Mexico's frontier comes alive with period adobe work, music and dance, trading, cooking, storytelling, livestock use demonstrations and other special programs.

December 2-3, 2016 ~*~ Traditional Holiday Celebration
     Witness the holiday pleasures and pastimes of the 1840s at an isolated trading post. Period games, foods, and festivities will enliven the fort. Reservations needed for the evening candlelight tours, phone (719) 383-5026 starting November 1, 2015.
