Ash Creek Crossing Pawnee County

William Bent was one of the four Bent brothers who in partnership with Ceran St. Vrain established what became known as Bent's Fort in 1834. Married to Owl Woman and later to her sister, Yellow Woman, daughters of Grey Thunder, Keeper of the Arrows, Bent had considerable influence among the Southern Cheyennes. In 1866, officials of the Bureau of Indian Affairs met with tribal leaders at Fort Zarah to gain approval of the amendments made to the Little Arkansas Treaty. Bent was there to distribute goods on behalf of the United States government as provided by the treaty. Bent's death, three years later, brought to a close a period of peace, through sometimes troubled, between the whites and the Southern Cheyennes.
